Little Free Library Project
Book Brigade is Building 20 Little Free Libraries!
Imagine a world where every child has access to a book. A world where curiosity is sparked, imaginations soar, and knowledge is freely shared. That's the vision behind our newest project to build at least 20 Little Free Libraries across northern Lake County Indiana.
By donating to this initiative, you're not just giving books; you're fostering a love of reading, encouraging community engagement, and empowering the next generation of thinkers and dreamers. Your contribution will help:
Increase literacy rates: Provide free access to books for children and adults who may not have other options.
Build stronger communities: Create spaces for neighbors to connect and share a love of reading.
Inspire creativity and imagination: Spark the curiosity and creativity of children and adults of all ages.
Every dollar you donate brings us closer to our goal of building 20 Little Free Libraries across Northwest Indiana. Together, we can make a lasting impact on our communities.
Where does your donation go?
Official Little Free Library Charter sign. Our goal is to get the majority of the charter signs in both English and Spanish: $54.94 after shipping.
The libraries we want to purchase are Composite Two Story Red Little Free Library. The two stories are to allow for adult books to be on the top level while children and board books are on the bottom. Each one of these are $384.71after shipping.
We also will need to buy the ground posts for each of these libraries, which costs $202.97 after shipping.
Sometimes, our Book Brigade is out of specific types of books, especially bilingual (English-Spanish) books. We may need to purchase books to help fill some of our libraries. These books range from $5 - $25. You can also shop our Book Wish List on Amazon here or contact us to host a book drive with your business, church, group, organization, etc.
Why this project?
Why Little Free Libraries?
North Lake County is a book desert, meaning access to books is limited. This lack of resources significantly impact educational opportunities and overall literacy rates. Book Brigade is expanding its reach by creating free access to books to everyone in the community 24/7.
What is a Book Desert?
A book desert is defined as a “geographic area with limited access to age-appropriate books, print materials and reading culture.” In high-income communities (those not identified as book deserts), there are about 13 books for every one child. In areas that are considered book deserts, however, there is only one book for every 300 children on average.
